4 – 7—8     METHOD

If you’re experiencing heightened stress levels, upset stomach, difficulty calming down throughout the day, and find yourself breathing from your chest rather than your belly, it’s advisable to utilize this method. Not breathing from your belly can indicate suboptimal functioning of your autonomic nervous system (ANS), impacting communication between your gut, brain, and other organs, potentially leading to health issues and overall ANS dysregulation. ANS dysregulation often manifests as an overactive and stressed nervous system. 

  1. Focus on your belly breathing; put one hand on your chest and one on your belly to activate belly breathing.
  2. For a slow count of 4 breathe in through your nose.
  3. Hold that breath for a count of 7.
  4. Exhale for a count of 8.
  5. Repeat 3-4 times.

Heart Breathing

If you’re experiencing shortness of breath diagnosed with atrial fibrillation, feel lightheaded when transitioning from lying to sitting, suffer from heightened anxiety throughout the day, are chronically stressed, and struggle to calm down at night, try employing this breathing technique. Since the heart is the body’s most metabolically active organ, utilizing this method can help recalibrate its functioning if it’s dysregulated. 

  1. Place your hand on your heart while you are breathing to check in with yourself.
  2. Inhale with a count of 4.
  3. Exhale with a count of 7.
  4. Repeat three times.
