Epigenetics is the study of how our genes can be influenced by our environment and lifestyle choices. It looks at how certain factors, like our diet, stress levels, or exposure to toxins, can cause modifications on whether or not certain genes are turned on and off.  These modifications don’t change the genetic code itself, but they can affect how our genes are expressed and how our bodies function. Epigenetics helps us understand how lifestyle choices can have long-lasting effects on our health and the health of future generations.  In essence it matters more what your are exposed to over time on your overall health.

An example of epigenetics is the effect of maternal diet on the health of offspring. Studies have shown that a mother’s diet during pregnancy can cause epigenetic changes in the developing fetus. For instance, inadequate nutrition during pregnancy can lead to modifications in gene expression that increase the risk of metabolic diseases in the child, such as obesity or diabetes, later in life. These changes occur without altering the DNA sequence but can have long-lasting impacts on the health and well-being of the individual.
